Uses about 15 human years for year one, 24 by year two, then a slower rate after age two that varies by adult size. It is a useful owner-facing estimate, not an official universal AVMA formula.

Uses human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, derived from DNA methylation in 104 Labrador Retrievers. It is scientifically interesting but does not adjust for breed size.

Dog age, breed size, life stage and biological aging

These concepts are related, but they are not interchangeable. Understanding the difference is more useful than treating “human years” as a diagnosis.

Chronological age vs human-equivalent age

A dog’s chronological age is the time since birth. A human-equivalent age is only a comparison model. It can make canine development easier to visualize, but it cannot tell you how healthy an individual dog is.

Why adult size matters

Small dogs generally live longer than large and giant dogs, so later-life aging is not identical across body sizes. For a mixed-breed dog, expected adult weight is often more useful than guessing a breed label.

AAHA canine life stages

The American Animal Hospital Association emphasizes puppy, young adult, mature adult and senior stages. AAHA specifically notes that life stage depends on age, size, breed, lifestyle and health status not a human-years conversion alone.

When is a dog considered senior?

AAHA defines senior as the final 25% of estimated lifespan rather than one universal birthday. Our result therefore shows only a broad size-based planning estimate; your veterinarian can interpret breed and individual health more precisely.

What the epigenetic clock measures

The Wang et al. study compared age-related DNA methylation patterns in Labrador Retrievers and humans. The logarithmic relationship aligned several physiological milestones, but a Labrador-derived molecular curve is not a universal breed-size calculator.

What if I do not know my dog’s birthday?

Use your best age estimate and treat the result as a range, not a precise biological age. Teeth, eyes, coat, muscle condition and medical history can provide clues, but estimating the age of an adult rescue dog is inherently uncertain.

A widely used owner-facing estimate is about 24 human years by age two. After that, the practical conversion rate can vary with adult size.

Using this calculator’s size-adjusted estimate, a 7-year-old dog is roughly 44 human years if small, 49 if medium, 54 if large, and 59 if giant. These are comparison estimates rather than medical ages.
Is the 7 dog years = 1 human year rule accurate?
No. It is too linear. Dogs mature very quickly in their first two years and later aging differs by size and breed.
Does breed affect dog years?
Yes, but body size is a major practical factor. Dogs within the same breed can also differ, which is why this calculator lets adult weight override the breed preset.
Can I calculate puppy age in human years using months?
Yes. Enter years and additional months or use an exact date of birth. Puppy-to-human comparisons are especially approximate because early canine development is extremely rapid.
